Meteor

Illustration · Animation

Objective

Take a finished still illustration and bring it to life.

The goal of this project was to improve my animation skills and learn more about Adobe After Effects.

Planning

While I was illustrating this piece, I had to be considerate of how layers would interact with each other while animated.

I had to keep my file well organized so it would be easier to break into pieces for animation.

Exploration

How could I make a super blobby form without

hand-drawn animation?

A matte choker was the solution. Playing around with the effect gave me the exact look I wanted, and pairing that with wave warp really brought the meteor to life.

Final Output

This animation didn't take a long time to execute, but it had a long process of planning and experimentation.

Takeaways

Rigging is interesting.

Going into this animation, I had no idea how I was going to animate the swaying leaves. I ended up rigging each one individually and then key-framing them. Rigging isn't too complicated, but it definitely forced me to keep my layers organized.
